The Changsha county administrative law enforcement bureau recently tracked down an enterprise suspected of discharging sulfur dioxide beyond authorized limits using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Liu Yi, director of the bureau's information center, said that the UAV in question can load up to 7.5 kg of equipment. Besides a built-in high-definition camera, it also has imported multi-function air detection devices. It can collect concentrations of air pollution sources such as TVOCs, PM2.5, PM10, O3, SO2, NO2 and CO, and send back data immediately to the information center.

The bureau has divided the county into eight parts due to the geographical distribution of 30 major air pollutant discharging companies. Two whole-county cruise flights are scheduled every month and the frequency will be adjusted according to actual demands.

The drone is only allowed to fly at a height of 120 m and within a 10 km diameter. If it detects abnormal data, the operator can decrease its altitude to confirm the source of the pollution.

It not only can cruise, detect and give early warnings, but also offers real-time images as evidence for law enforcement. The device has also been applied in disaster relief, river supervision, monitoring of road conditions and housing demolition.
