Short, sweet fig season comes to Chunhua town
Lusciously sweet figs have started to appear on the market in Changsha county, adding to a bountiful summer fruit season.
Besides a unique taste and texture, the fruit also boasts health benefits such as helping lower blood pressure as it's a good source of potassium. Its rich fiber content also has a positive effect on weight management.

A 30-mu (2-hectare) fig planting base in the county's Chunhua town with an estimated average yield of 2,500 kilograms per mu is expected to back up the local market supply. Prime harvesting season will fall in mid-August, said Zhu Shunyi, the principal of the base.
The fruit's market price this year, 40 yuan per kilogram, is much reduced from previous years, almost by half according to Zhu. The more affordable price is owed to the drop of management and input costs brought by advancing technology in tree support, he added.
The base, located at the town's Chunhuashan village, has opened for fig-picking and is attracting many weekend visitors.
